Have you ever walked up to introduce yourself to someone only to have them look at the floor? What about offering your hand for a handshake only to receive the "limp fish?" So tell me - what impressions did you make from that?
One of the first things I learned in business is this: me and my business are one in the same. How I represent myself is a direct reflection on how other's percieve my business. And it all starts from when you enter the room. The truth is you say your first sentence before you even open your mouth. Think about the last time you were in a social setting - watching the door what were the assumptions you made of others in the first 15 seconds. How do you want to be perceived? Walking into a room (especially where you know very few people) has got to be one of the toughest things I have faced. Believe in who you are, relish in your accomplishments and be proud - there is no one out there exactly like you - I promise.
The dreaded handshake. My philospophy here is "go firm or go home". The "limp fish" has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves. What does a handshake like that mean? Make sure a firm, strong handshake meets that outstretched hand - afterall aren't you the strong, confident business person they want to work with?
Work in eye contact and your all set! Make it and keep it! Eye contact displays confidence and says you understand what the other person is really saying. Looking someone in the eye shows you are paying attention and everyone loves a good listener.
Stand tall - Look up - and Shake firm.
