A very good friend of mine and fellow Virtual Assistant, recently lost everything in a house fire – and I mean everything. Her entire house burned to the ground. Only by the grace of God, was no one home at the time. So between you and me, nothing of real value was lost. However, this really made me think……what would I do if I came home one day and my entire world as I knew it was gone?
Think about it – she not only lost personal items such as clothing, furniture, pictures, miscellaneous items, etc., but she also lost her entire business office. Computers, files, equipment….all gone. What did my friend do? After the initial shock, instead of panicking, she calmly retrieved a copy of her emergency plan that she kept off site, and was able to call all of her clients and associates to let them know that she would be down for a few days, but would be back up and running shortly.
Back up and running? How is that possible I asked? Well, she went on to explain that she had an emergency plan in writing that spelled out exactly what to do in a case like this. Her plan includes such items as contact information for all her clients and associates, important website addresses and login/passwords, contacts for her insurance companies, bank account information, you name it. The best part is, she kept a copy of this at a nearby relative’s house for just this emergency. And she wasn’t too worried about her computer being a loss, as she was using an online back-up system. So she was able to access her computer files from anywhere.
Having an emergency plan is a two-fold benefit in my opinion. Creating a document that spells out exactly who, what, where, and when will be extremely beneficial if you ever have a situation like my friend did. But it will also be a great asset to your loved ones in the event that something should happen to you. I know this is not an easy subject to discuss, but think about it. I mean really think about it. Do your loved ones know who to contact on your behalf both personally and professionally? I know mine don’t – yet. They will once I get my emergency plan in order.
